New experiments:: Falling from Grace

Falling from Grace by ~pinkbat1407 on deviantART

Clicking and viewing full-size will help, because there's a tiny story alongside the drawing that I don't think is very visible in the smaller version (unless you have exceptional eyesight, which, of course I have no reason for assuming you don't).

A little whimsy :D

New experiments:: Apocalypse

Apocalypse is a short story I wrote for the Writing in Practice class at university. (Go check it out, it's quite a bit less lousy than my attempts at art. No really!)

Anyway, so after writing the story I took upon myself the grand project of illustrating it, just to see if I could. I couldn't, of course. Here is the first panel I drew:

I'm unhappy with his hand, which looks too feminine, and I'm quite sure the shadows are all at the wrong places, but is it worse than that?

---

Anyway, on to the second panel, which is supposed to be a long shot from the other end of the bar. The purpose is to make the people in the bar obscure individually, but present nevertheless. I couldn't decide if I should give the background a wash first and then colour in the people (panel on top), or if I should colour in the people first and give everything a very watered-down wash eventually (panel on bottom). Look and them and tell me which one works?

Oh, ignore the appalling line art. As you can see, the two panels (which are supposed to be two ways of colouring the same panel) don't even have people or furniture at approximately the same places. Neither of these was supposed to be the final panel, and I'm an impatient woman, so I just sketched in some shapes directly with ink so that I could experiment with the colour. What I'm asking you is: which colouring looks better, or can you actually tell the difference?

Shading Exercise 1

First exercise in shading a face. The epitome of lousiness, yes, but you gotta notice that this is the first time I'm putting any shade on a face (and maybe the tenth time I'm ever using watercolour in my life). Also, first time anything drawn with drawing ink. Using a crow-quill pen, which is Arnab's suggestion. I'm not nearly good with a fine brush yet.

Also also, the Michael Jackson-like nose is a little cured, yes?

Alka 2

Watercolour on paper. This is for watercolour practice really, because I happen to be phenomenally bad at it.

Alka's Theme/Worn

Sketched this for the Illo Friday topic "Worn", because I need to practise drawing these people, and thought a mindscape of Alka Chakravarty would be interesting. See enlarged version, please. The thumbnail looks really pathetic. You'll never know there's a saxophonist in coat-tails otherwise. Or a woman with an umbrella (which is a result of me trying to think I'm Jack Vettriano in the early hours of the day, I imagine).

Words from Leonard Cohen's 'Stranger Song'. And yes, I hate the lettering exactly that much as well. I'll do a better job of it, if I'm still alive and around after Wednesday evening.

Also, first job ever with light-tracing, and first job in about 10 years with water colour. I pat myself on the back. ^_^

P. S. Click-to-enlarge doesn't seem work on this post, so here is an external link to the same thing on my dA account. Sorry for all the trouble! Really try to see the enlarged version, it's way more fun.
